Battery selection is rarely as simple as choosing a voltage and capacity. How the battery will be discharged, where it will be installed, how frequently it will be recharged and the environmental conditions it will encounter can all influence performance and service life.

A 12 volt AGM battery can be a practical option for various auxiliary and standby power applications in Australia. Its sealed construction and established lead-acid technology offer several advantages, but understanding its limitations is equally important before making a purchase.

AGM Technology Explained

AGM stands for Absorbent Glass Mat.

Unlike a traditional flooded lead-acid battery, an AGM battery holds its electrolyte within absorbent fibreglass separators between the battery plates. This creates a sealed, valve-regulated lead-acid battery design.

For users, one of the most noticeable advantages is reduced routine maintenance. AGM batteries do not require the regular electrolyte-level checks associated with serviceable flooded batteries.
