Smoke alarms are now very important to be installed in any commercial or residential place. Most of the multiplex where there are a lot of apartments and families living, the malls and the theatres where smoking is not allowed and some of the luxury hotel rooms where smoking is not allowed, and the places where there are chances of fire and smoke.

The alarms installed should be of a good brand and the testing of the same should always be done for your and others' safety purposes. The smoke alarm testing should be such that the sensor catches the smoke and the fire from a distance and the ringer lets the people know about the fire.

  • WHY IS SMOKE ALARM TESTING IMPORTANT

As it is an electric device and they are not infallible. Even if the alarm works on the batteries, the batteries get low and die. As an electric device, any part of the smoke detector can wear and tear over time. That is why Smoke alarm testing should not be neglected and should be done regularly from time to time.

Smoke detectors should be checked once a month for the wiring and batteries and the batteries should also be replaced one to two times a year. This is important work to do and should not be slipped out of the mind as smoke detectors are essential in busy and crowded places.

Step 1.  Alert all the family members if in the residence or alert the staff and other people in the commercial area so that no one panics after listening to the high-pitched alarm.

Step 2. Take everyone far away from the fire alarm to check the frequency and the range of the alarm. This will tell if the alarm is working properly or is weak or low, needs maintenance or a change of batteries, etc.

Step 3. The most important and final step to checking the smoke alarm is to press and hold the test button on the smoke detector, it may take a little while after pressing the test button. The loud ear-piercing sound will begin in just a moment then you know that it is working but if no or very low sound is heard then you know what to do.

  • SOME OTHER WAYS TO CHECK THE ALARM

  1. You can use an aerosol to check the sensor of the smoke detector. The aerosol is an inexpensive spray designed mainly to check the smoke alarms.

  2. Testing the smoke alarm using the real smoke can also be done if mentioned by the manufacturer. 

  3. If your detector has completed 10 years then it needs to be changed even if it's in a working condition so far.

Installing the Smoke alarm testing detector is easy but do check the properties which the detector includes and choose according to the range of the fire alarm. But never let the testing of the alarm slip from your mind. Testing from time to time is as essential as the proper installation. You can ask the smoke alarm testing person to come and check or you can do it by yourself, but with all the safety needed.
