  1. Take patio measurements:

  • You can either attach a patio to the exterior of the house or you can have a freestanding structure that is supported by vertical poles from the ground

  • Measure the size of the patio 

  • Then decide what material you will need to build it

  • Take correct measurements so that you do not face problems later


For a freestanding structure:


  • It is wise to add extra inches to the lengths for the pockets that fit around the supports

  • Measure the height for the support system


For an attached awning:


  • If you are planning on building an attached awning, you will have to get some more material

  1. Buy material:

  1. Time to sew:

  • After you have sewn, test the fit with the help of the pipe

  • Measure all 4 sides of the material and later cut the pipe accordingly

  • In order to dig holes into the ground, use a posthole digger at an appropriate distance

  • In order to give the pipe firm support, use gravel or a concrete


  1. Build an attached awning:


  • For an attached patio awning that will connect to your house, you need two flagpole holders and three pipes

  • Insert the three pipes in the front and two in the side of the awning

  • These flagpole brackets are to be attached to the exterior of your house

  • You will have to drill holes at an appropriate height

  • Use a good and a strong ladder to drill holes at a height

  • Slide the poles correctly into those brackets in order to connect them with the connectors

  • In this way, your patio awning is complete
