Concrete Polishing – How is it done?

Concrete polishing procedure:

Grinding:  

The polishing procedure begins with grinding the concrete surface, which is carried out using a diamond segmented abrasive disk grinder. Grinding is done until the desired texture and smoothness is achieved.

The grinding process involves the usage of various levels of grit through varying diamond particle sizes, beginning with coarse diamond (a grit of 30 to 40) and gradually moving on to a fine one(ending with a grit of 150).       

Pre-grinding stages-

  • All the previously-applied coatings are removed for beginning with the further process.

  • Epoxy resin is applied to the surface of the concrete exhibits surface cracks.

Post-grinding stages:

A chemical hardener is applied to the surface after the desired smoothness is achieved through grinding. Other attributes of the concrete are also checked to ensure that the surface is ready for polishing. 

Polishing:

A special resin-bonded diamond disk is used for the purpose of polishing. Like grinding, polishing also begins with coarse particles and switching to fine ones gradually. The process begins with a 400 grit-disk, followed by a finer disk for a grit of 800, and finally finishing the process a 3000 grit-disk to give it a glossy mirror-like finish. 

A stain-guard coating is done over the polished surface to end to facilitate easy cleaning.
